Postdoctoral Associate

A position is available immediately for a full-time postdoctoral research associate to study cellular processes involved in cell differentiation and morphogenesis using Arabidopsis leaf trichomes and developing cotton seed trichomes ("fibers") as model systems. Global changes in expression profiles in developmental mutants using oligonucleotide or universal microarrays will coupled to reverse genetic approaches, including RNAi. Emphasis will be on investigating the functional role of a family of transcription factors in the combinatorial regulation of secondary metabolism.

Availability:
Immediately (1 June 2003) or until position is filled.
Position Qualifications:
Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. in plant biology, molecular genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field. Written and oral communication skills and technical competence in genomics are required. Experience in bioinformatics is desirable, as is the ability to work independently and in cooperation with other team members.
Salary:
Competitive starting salary ($32,000 - $35,000) with fringe benefits will be based on background, experience and publication record. The appointees are subject to annual reviews to evaluate job performance.

Graduate Students

Openings are available for students entering UCD Ph.D. programs in Plant Biology or Genetics in 2003-2004.

Students accepted into the program will participate in an active research program to study gene function in a development and evolutionary context using a combination of genetic, genomics, reverse genetic and biochemical approaches. Current projects for students include determining mutant phenotypes of de-regulated transcription factors, examining cis- and trans-regulatory elements, and determining what downstream structural genes are targeted for regulation by one or more factors. Detailed analysis included mutagenesis of conserved motifs and domain swapping experiments.

Fellowship:
Qualified candidates are invited to apply for a 4-year endowed fellowship awarded by our department to exceptional students.

Undergraduate Interns

UCD undergraduates in biology, biotechnology, or genetics are invited to join an active research program in molecular biology and functional genomics to gain expertise in cutting-edge and emerging technology. Interns will work closely with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students for initial training. Qualified students with advanced training and technical competence are encouraged to take part in workshops, colloquiums and workshops, honors' thesis programs, and to develop independent research projects.

Summer Interns

Each summer, undergraduate students, high school students and high school teachers join our research activities through several campus-sponsored programs and workshops. Space is limited and applicants interested in this experience are invited to apply early for consideration.
